Price Hikes for Bread and Grains Forecast in Ukraine Through April

Прогнози щодо зростання цін на хліб та зернові в Україні до квітня.

Anticipated Increase in Staple Food Costs

Basic food staples in Ukraine, including bread and grains, are projected to become more expensive in March and April 2025. This trend is part of a broader pattern of inflation affecting household essentials. Over the next two months, the price of grains could rise by up to 5 percent. Meanwhile, bread prices are expected to continue their established monthly increase of 1.5-2%, a pattern that has now persisted for three consecutive years.

Experts note that the rise in bread prices is a consistent and predictable phenomenon. As analyst Denys Marchuk emphasizes,

“Bread prices are a constant story. Nothing new is happening here: the price of bread traditionally increases by 1.5-2% every month. This has been going on for the third year in a row.”

Additionally, a shortage of buckwheat has been recorded in Ukraine, which will further impact the market.

Price Forecast for Buckwheat

Buckwheat prices are anticipated to rise by 10-25 percent from current levels by August 2026. Denys Marchuk pointed out that the reasons for this increase are tied to a transitional period and the depletion of old crop reserves. Consequently, consumers should prepare for changes in the pricing of basic food items.

The rising cost of essential foods in Ukraine could have serious implications for consumers, particularly amid ongoing economic challenges. Increases for bread and grains will strain household budgets, potentially leading to reduced consumption or shifts in dietary habits. The buckwheat shortage also highlights issues within the agricultural sector that require urgent attention to stabilize the market.

Monitoring these trends is crucial for understanding the broader economic situation in the country.
