Ukraine Braces for Icy Fog on January 30, Followed by Severe Arctic Blast from February 1

Україна готується до туманів і морозів, які охоплять країну на початку лютого.

Weather Forecast for Ukraine on January 30

The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center reports that January 30 will bring varied conditions across the country, including icy glaze and fog, before a sharp cold snap begins on February 1. This winter weather pattern is typical for the region but requires heightened caution.

Light snowfall is forecast in parts of the northwestern and most northern regions. In Sumy Oblast, moderate snow is expected during the day. Temperatures in northern areas will drop to between -7°C and -12°C (19°F to 10°F) over the course of the day.

Rain will fall in the south and southeast, with significant rainfall in places across Odesa and Mykolaiv oblasts. Temperatures in the south and southeast will range from +1°C to +6°C (34°F to 43°F) at night and during the day, while in Crimea they will be between +7°C and +12°C (45°F to 54°F).

Weather Across the Rest of Ukraine

Elsewhere in Ukraine, wet snow and rain are predicted. Central and Kharkiv oblasts will experience icy glaze and wet snow accumulation. Temperatures in central regions will fluctuate between 0°C and -5°C (32°F to 23°F). In Zakarpattia, no significant precipitation is expected, with daily temperatures from -1°C to +4°C (30°F to 39°F). Icy conditions are expected on roads across the country, except in the south and southeast.

Overnight and in the morning, fog is possible in places across most southern oblasts, as well as in Kirovohrad and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. Winds will be predominantly northeastern at 7-12 m/s, with gusts of 15-20 m/s possible in the northeast during the day.

Kyiv Oblast and the capital will be cloudy with possible light snow in places and icy roads. Temperatures in Kyiv Oblast will fall to between -7°C and -12°C (19°F to 10°F), while in Kyiv itself they will drop to between -9°C and -11°C (16°F to 12°F).

From February 1, a powerful Arctic anticyclone will envelop Ukraine, leading to a significant temperature drop. The peak of the cold is expected from February 1 to 3, 2026. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine has declared a Level III danger (red) for a number of oblasts.

The anticipated cold snap and deteriorating weather conditions could significantly impact transport infrastructure and road safety, particularly given the icy glaze.

Authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution on roads and follow safety recommendations during adverse weather events. It is also important to monitor weather forecasts closely, as conditions can change rapidly, especially during the winter period.
