Two Russian Soldiers Identified in Torture and Murder of Ukrainian Policeman in Kyiv Region

Російських військових впізнали у жорстокому вбивстві українського правоохоронця в Київській області.

Identifying Russian Military Personnel Involved in War Crimes

Ukraine's National Police have identified two additional servicemen from the Russian Federation implicated in war crimes committed during the temporary occupation of the village of Bohdanivka in the Kyiv region. These soldiers are confirmed to be members of the 239th Tank Regiment, part of the 90th Tank Division of Russia's Central Military District. They are accused of unlawfully detaining local residents in horrific conditions and torturing a police officer.

Details of the Crimes

The atrocities occurred between March 19 and 21, when the invaders deprived local civilians of their liberty. One of the detainees was a police officer who was in civilian clothes at the time. He and two other civilians were captured, beaten, and forcibly dragged into a basement, where they were held without food or water in unsanitary conditions.

“The guard was brutally tortured, then thrown unconscious into a pit for well equipment, which was sealed with a metal cover. The other two prisoners were also thrown in there,” the National Police of Ukraine press service reported.

Following the de-occupation of Bohdanivka, the body of the tortured policeman has not been found, and the third civilian remains missing. Law enforcement has charged the Russian servicemen with mistreatment of civilians and violations of the laws and customs of war. Additionally, Ukraine's Security Service has issued a notice of suspicion in absentia against Russian General Denis Barila, who is also implicated in the torture of civilians in the village of Yahidne in the Chernihiv region in 2022. Denis Barila, a major general in the Russian army, commanded the 55th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade in March 2022, which participated in the occupation of Yahidne near Chernihiv.

These events highlight the severity of human rights violations occurring in Ukraine during the war. Identifying the soldiers responsible for war crimes is a crucial step toward ensuring justice and accountability for crimes committed against civilians. Such actions by law enforcement agencies can help garner international support and pressure on Russia, while also raising awareness of the conflict's impact on local populations.

As the investigation into war crimes continues, it is crucial to examine other documented cases of atrocities, such as the recent identification of four individuals responsible for severe violations in Antratsyt in 2014. These incidents highlight a disturbing pattern of abuse that has emerged throughout the conflict.
