Polish Backing for Donald Trump's Nobel Nomination

Poland has declared it is prepared to endorse a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for former U.S. President Donald Trump, but only on one specific condition. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated during a press conference in Warsaw that Poland would support the nomination if Trump successfully brokers a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. The position was reported by 'Glavcom' citing TVP World. This offer highlights the high international stakes surrounding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

'If President Trump brings about a just peace for Ukraine, I will also sign such a nomination. We want peace, but it must be a just peace. If he achieves that, he will deserve the world's recognition.' Radosław Sikorski

Luxembourg's Foreign Minister, Xavier Bettel, has also expressed support for the idea of forming a committee to back Trump's nomination.

Initiative and Reactions

The Polish Sejm received a formal letter on Friday requesting support for the nomination from parliamentary speakers and other high-ranking officials. The primary initiators behind the push to recognize Trump are:

  • Mike Johnson, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives
  • Amir Ohana, Speaker of Israel's Knesset

Sejm Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty announced he would give his opinion on the initiative on Monday.

In a related development, a leader of the Venezuelan opposition has given her own Nobel medal to Donald Trump. The Nobel Committee clarified that the status of a laureate remains unchanged regardless of the physical transfer of award symbols, and it does not comment on laureates' actions after the prize is awarded. The statutes of the Nobel Foundation contain no restrictions on the disposal of a medal or prize money.

Poland's conditional offer reflects the significant role nations are playing in current peace efforts and underscores the critical importance of international backing for achieving stability in Ukraine. A nomination for Trump could serve as a symbolic gesture to strengthen ties between Poland and the U.S., particularly amid the geopolitical challenges facing the region. The forthcoming responses from Polish and Israeli leaders will be pivotal in determining whether Trump's nomination gains the necessary support.
