Poland's Military Support to Ukraine
Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, has announced plans for the country’s most substantial military aid package to date for Ukraine. He emphasized that Warsaw remains committed to backing Ukraine despite the intensifying hybrid warfare tactics employed by Russia, which are increasingly taking on a kinetic dimension. Sikorski highlighted ongoing Russian provocations, including violations of Polish airspace using drones and missiles.
Additionally, Sikorski referenced remarks by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about Poland potentially playing a role in expediting the delivery of Patriot missile systems to Ukraine. He noted that specific military shipments will be coordinated closely with Poland’s Ministry of Defense. The Deputy Prime Minister also stressed that Warsaw does not expect any de-escalation from Russia, stating, “It is clear that Russia is escalating the situation, so we must prepare accordingly.”
Rising Hybrid Warfare Threats
According to Sikorski, Russia continues to escalate hybrid warfare actions that border on outright aggression. Examples he cited include:
- planting explosives;
- deploying drones at an international airport;
- attempting to set fire to a commercial airliner;
- arson attacks on a shopping center in Warsaw;
- dispatching death squads to carry out killings.
“These acts blur the lines between hybrid warfare and open aggression,” Sikorski warned.
In response to these threats, Polish border authorities plan to install an electronic security system along approximately 112 kilometers of the border with Ukraine. This system will include advanced monitoring devices and motion detectors to complement physical barriers. Sikorski underscored the need for solidarity, saying, “The more Russia bombs Ukraine, the stronger our support must be for Ukraine and its people.”
