The Vice-Speaker of the Polish Senate, Magdalena Bejat, stated that changes in support for Ukrainian refugees have resulted from the veto by President Karol Nawrocki. Now, the 'Left' is preparing a bill that aims to restore some benefits. The issue of social assistance for Ukrainians in Poland has already been a subject of discussion, especially regarding the circles of its recipients. This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Bejat’s remarks.

Why has support for Ukrainian refugees changed in Poland

Bejat reminded that the President of Poland vetoed the law regulating assistance to Ukraine. The Senate failed to prepare a solid alternative, and prolonging the process could leave Ukrainians in legal uncertainty.

«Therefore, we had to make compromises, and, so to speak, some of them were very problematic and remain so because they took away support from those who are most vulnerable,» explained the Vice-Speaker of the Senate.

According to her, the 'Left' is already working on a new draft law that aims to restore some of the canceled benefits. Bejat added that she has discussed the situation with representatives of non-governmental organizations and will continue to address this issue.

What role do Ukrainians play in the Polish economy

Bejat emphasized that Ukrainian migrants make a significant contribution to Poland's economy, particularly by paying taxes. According to her, these funds help to finance pension payments as well.

«The taxes they pay are substantial amounts, and one could even say that they support Polish pensioners, because pensions for elderly people are also paid from their taxes,» she noted.

The Vice-Speaker believes that Poland should support individuals who are unable to work, including ensuring their access to medical services. The issue of access for Ukrainians to treatment remains important, especially against the backdrop of changes in medical assistance rules.

Moreover, the conditions for receiving social benefits for families with children are changing in Poland. Earlier, Inkorr reported on new rules for the 800 Plus aid.
