Addressing the Waiting Conditions at Chełm Railway Station
A new terminal and modernized platforms are being constructed to resolve the poor waiting conditions for Ukrainian passengers at the Chełm railway station in Poland. These works, now in their final stages, are being overseen by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The railway station in Chełm, Poland, was fully demolished as part of a reconstruction project that began in July 2024. The old station, which had been in operation since 1961, no longer met modern standards. This upgrade is critical as the station serves as a key transit hub, with approximately 3,000 passengers from Ukraine passing through daily to connect to cities including:
- Berlin
- Warsaw
- Łódź
- Poznań
To improve waiting conditions in the interim, Ukrzaliznytsia has installed heated 'invincibility wagons' to provide shelter for passengers. The modernization plans call for the canopies and platforms to be updated this year. As noted by Piotr Łukasiewicz:
“I don't want to make empty promises, but I will say this issue will be resolved quickly and effectively. It is under the control of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. It is, in fact, already happening.”
This renovation is part of broader efforts to strengthen cross-border infrastructure between the two nations. Consequently, Ukrainian passengers can expect improved waiting conditions at Chełm station in the near future. The station reconstruction and infrastructure modernization aim not only to increase traveler comfort but also to strengthen transport links between Ukraine and Poland, which is especially relevant given the consistently growing passenger traffic. Effective resolution of existing issues is further ensured through joint coordination with Polish government structures.
