Poland's Military Response to Russian Aggression
In reaction to a combined Russian assault on Ukrainian cities, Poland launched fighter jets and activated its air defense systems. The attacks, which targeted Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih, occurred overnight on February 26. Poland's Armed Forces Operational Command confirmed these defensive measures, highlighting the regional security implications of the conflict.
The Operational Command stated that it scrambled fighter jets on standby and deployed early warning aircraft. Ground-based air defense and radar identification systems were also placed on their highest state of alert. The operational commander noted that
"all necessary forces and assets at his disposal were engaged"(Armed Forces Operational Command of Poland). The situation is being continuously monitored, with all subordinate forces and assets remaining ready for immediate response.
Strikes Across Ukrainian Cities
During the night of February 26, Russian forces struck Kyiv using drones and ballistic missiles. Kharkiv faced a massive combined attack involving drones and missiles, with at least four districts coming under fire:
- Shevchenkivskyi
- Kyivskyi
- Saltivskyi
- Slobidskyi
Russian forces also attacked Zaporizhzhia that night. In Kryvyi Rih, the number of reported casualties rose to two. An 82-year-old woman sought medical assistance, following earlier reports of an 89-year-old man being wounded. This escalation underscores the ongoing intensity of Russia's campaign against civilian areas.
These events mark a significant intensification of hostilities in Ukraine, driven by relentless Russian attacks. Poland's decision to scramble its fighter jets demonstrates the readiness of neighboring NATO states to respond to potential threats to regional security. Such actions are part of a broader allied strategy to support Ukraine and deter further Russian aggression.
