Poland Nears Finalization of EU Credit Agreement
Poland is on the verge of signing a credit agreement with the European Union under the SAFE program, a scheme aimed at strengthening the nation's defense capabilities. The deal is expected to be finalized within the next few dozen hours. Once signed, Poland will receive an initial tranche covering 15% of the total loan amount, with funds already earmarked by the European Commission.
Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, the Polish government's official for the SAFE program, stated that
“the procedure will be completed within several dozen hours”and confirmed that
“the funds have already been reserved by the European Commission.”Four senior Polish officials will sign the agreement: Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Finance Minister Andrzej Domański, and two representatives from the National Bank of Poland.
Signatories from Both Sides
On the European Union side, the agreement will be signed by EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius and EU Budget Commissioner Piotr Serafin. The SAFE program, which stands for Supporting Affordable Energy & Security, serves as an EU lending instrument designed to modernize military forces and ensure energy resilience.
Separately, traffic at the Medyka-Shehyni border crossing has been temporarily restricted due to road construction. These limitations were introduced for pavement repairs on the Polish side.
This credit agreement with the EU under the SAFE program marks a significant step for Poland as it seeks to bolster its defense posture amid the shifting security landscape in Europe. The funds from the EU could be used to upgrade military infrastructure and address energy needs, both critical for regional stability. Such initiatives also highlight the close cooperation between Poland and the European Union in defense and security matters.
In a similar vein, as Poland secures vital funding for its defense, Ukraine is also set to receive significant financial support from the EU. This initiative underscores the broader commitment of European nations to enhance security measures in light of current geopolitical challenges.
