Events of July 30 and Their Aftermath
On July 30, amid a Russian strike, Polish forces encountered difficulty identifying a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet operating near the Poland-Ukraine border. This raised concerns about potential friendly fire incidents. Consequently, Poland requested Ukraine to provide more detailed updates on the movement of its aircraft in the border region. Approximately 70 missiles were launched that day, with around 20 heading toward Polish territory. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted the majority of these missiles over Ukraine.
Polish military scrambled two fighters to investigate an unidentified object near the border. Irenaeus Nowak explained,
“we were unable to determine the exact nature of the object moving close to the Polish border,”which posed a risk of accidental engagement. One F-16 was positioned near the Poland-Ukraine boundary, while the other was refueling mid-air. Around 4 a.m., the pilots could not immediately identify the target, which was later confirmed to be a Ukrainian MiG-29 tracked by the Polish F-16 and ground-based air defense systems.
Following this incident, Poland’s Operational Command reached out to the Chief of the Ukrainian General Staff and the Commander of Ukraine’s Air Forces, requesting regular notifications regarding Ukrainian aviation activities near the border. Prior to July 30, Poland only received intel on Russian drones and missiles via the 'Virage' system. Afterward, Ukraine increased its communication about its aircraft movements in the vicinity.
Missile Crash Site Discovered and Official Responses
In the hours following the missile barrage, a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile was found to have crashed in the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia, Lublin Voivodeship, creating a crater approximately 10 meters wide and 5 meters deep. Ukraine offered assistance to Poland in inspecting the crash site. On July 31, Polish authorities confirmed that Russian missile had indeed entered Polish airspace during the night of July 30.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated,
“there is no reason to believe that Poland was the intended target of this missile,”emphasizing the importance of cooperation with Ukraine in air defense matters. A full investigation into the incident is still underway.
