Poland is preparing to roll back the special support measures for Ukrainian refugees that were introduced in 2022. According to the new draft legislation, from March 4, 2026, Ukrainians will be treated like other foreigners, and general migration rules will apply to them. The regulation of the status of Ukrainian refugees will be guaranteed until 2027 according to the recommendations of the European Commission.
The new rules will also impact the access of Ukrainian refugees to social and medical services. They will have the opportunity to receive emergency medical care, but for other services, they will need to have a job and contribute, just like other residents. To benefit from the '800+' program for children, parents will also need to have official employment.
According to Karolina Haletska, most Ukrainian refugees have already successfully integrated into Polish society, found jobs, and are sending their children to schools. Maintaining special conditions for Ukrainians could create a risk of unequal treatment towards other migrants.
Border crossing rules with Poland
To enter Poland, one must have not only the necessary documents but also a sufficient amount of money depending on the duration of stay. For example, for a short visit of up to three days, around 8,000 hryvnias is needed, while for a longer stay, plan on 900 hryvnias per day.
Poland is preparing to abolish special support measures for Ukrainian refugees and is considering the integration of Ukrainians into local society. The new rules define the procedure for regulating the status of refugees, access to medical assistance, and the conditions for crossing the border with Poland. Ukrainians should familiarize themselves with the changes and comply with all new requirements for a hassle-free stay in the country.
