Poland has extended border controls with Germany and Lithuania until October 4. Minister of the Interior Marcin Kiewinski explained that this measure is related to the changing routes of illegal migrants at the borders with Lithuania and Latvia.

“98% of the tightness of our “dam” leads to Belarusian and Russian services and illegal migration moving to other sections,” emphasized Kiewinski.

The minister noted that European partners understand the reasons that led Poland to implement border controls. He also mentioned that further steps in this direction would be considered in September.

Since the beginning of July, Poland has been conducting checks at the borders with Germany and Lithuania to prevent an uncontrolled flow of migrants. In a week, more than 75 thousand people were checked, and wanted persons and stolen vehicles were also identified.

Further measures regarding border control will be considered in September, but for now, the control remains in effect until October 4.
