Poland to Maintain Border Checks with Germany and Lithuania Through 2026

Польща продовжить контроль на кордонах із Німеччиною та Литвою до 2026 року.

Polish Border Controls Extended Until 2026

Poland will continue to conduct border checks at its internal European Union frontiers with Germany and Lithuania until October 1, 2026. The Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration announced that this special inspection regime, which has been in effect since April 5, 2023, will remain in place. According to a ministry statement,

"The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration is extending border control. Checks at the borders with Germany and Lithuania will be maintained from April 5 until October 1, 2026."

Border Security Operations

Border security is the responsibility of Poland's Border Guard, police, and territorial defense forces. The enhanced controls have already led to arrests. On March 31, in the Polish town of Sanok, border guards detained two Ukrainian citizens who were illegally transporting 12 Russian nationals across the border. None of the detained Russian citizens possessed valid documents, and they had all applied for residence in Hungary, pledging to remain there without the right to leave.

These incidents highlight the intensified controls at Poland's borders, which are likely to impact migration patterns in the region. This move comes as the EU continues to grapple with complex migration and security challenges. The decision to prolong border checks underscores Poland's focus on security and its commitment to European safety standards. It may also influence broader EU discussions on migration and asylum policy, as member states seek to balance humanitarian obligations with national security concerns.

The ongoing border checks are not the only measure Poland is taking in response to regional security concerns. In a related development, Poland has also closed its borders with the EU until October 2026 due to Belarus, highlighting the country’s proactive stance in managing its borders amid evolving geopolitical dynamics. This situation underscores the complexities Poland faces as it strives to balance security and migration issues.
