Poland Extends Legal Stay for Ukrainians Until 2026, Tightens Aid and Healthcare Rules

Польща продовжує термін перебування українців до 2026 року, одночасно посилюючи правила допомоги та медичного забезпечення.

New Legislation for Ukrainian Refugees in Poland

The Polish Senate has passed a new law extending the legal right of Ukrainian refugees to remain in the country until March 4, 2026. This decision comes as Poland continues to host one of the largest populations of Ukrainians displaced by the war. However, the legislation also introduces stricter conditions for receiving social benefits and limits access to healthcare services for adult Ukrainian citizens.

Approved on September 17, the law received support from 57 senators, while 32 voted against it. A key change ties eligibility for financial aid, including under the '800+' program, to parents' professional activity and their children's enrollment in Polish schools. The only exceptions will be parents of children with disabilities.

Healthcare Access Restrictions

Furthermore, the law imposes restrictions on free medical services for adult Ukrainians. This includes access to medical and pharmaceutical programs, therapeutic rehabilitation, and dental treatment. These changes could significantly impact the lives of Ukrainians who remain in Poland while the war in their homeland continues.

Extending the legal status of Ukrainian refugees in Poland until 2026 is a crucial step in supporting those who fled the war.

Nevertheless, the new conditions for social assistance and the limitations on healthcare may complicate life for many Ukrainians facing difficult circumstances. These adjustments reflect broader trends in European refugee support policies, which are evolving in response to economic pressures and shifting social priorities.
