Poland's Response to Hate Crimes
Poland is taking active steps to combat hate crimes by establishing specialized prosecutor's offices dedicated to investigating them. General Prosecutor Waldemar Żurek has signed an order appointing these specialized units. To carry out this mandate, 49 district prosecutor's offices and one regional prosecutor's office have been designated. The decree is already in force, signaling the seriousness of the Polish government's intent in this matter. This move comes as Poland has provided significant support to Ukrainian refugees following Russia's full-scale invasion.
Polish Public Opinion on Ukraine
Against the backdrop of Polish-Ukrainian relations, the All-Poland Research Group (OGB) has published the results of a sociological study revealing varied perceptions of Ukrainians among Poles. According to the survey:
- 35.9% of respondents consider Ukraine and the Ukrainian people as friends.
- 31.27% of those polled perceive Ukraine as a hostile country.
The highest level of negative sentiment was recorded among young people aged 18–29.
Despite differing views on Ukraine, 51.31% of Polish citizens believe their country has strong allies on the world stage. Among Poland's most trusted partners, the United States ranks first at 43.31%, followed by:
- Great Britain (36.95%)
- Germany (30.41%)
- France (27.95%)
These figures point to a complex situation within Polish society, where attitudes toward Ukraine are ambiguous. As Piotr Nowocień noted,
“In uncertain times, a true friend is one who comes to your aid in the face of a threat, not one who speaks beautifully about values.”This underscores the importance of concrete actions in international relations, not just verbal support.
The measures taken by Poland to combat hate crimes may be seen as a response to rising societal tensions, including those related to Ukrainians. The complex dynamics between Poland and Ukraine, reflected in the sociological research, highlight the need for continued dialogue and mutual understanding between the peoples, especially amid contemporary global challenges. The situation underscores the importance of interstate support based not only on political interests but also on social cohesion and cultural exchange.
