Polish Prosecutors Charge Ukrainian Train Drivers with Smuggling Men Across Border

Польські правоохоронці висунули обвинувачення українським машиністам за порушення митних правил під час перетворення кордону.

Ukrainian Train Drivers Face Polish Court

Prosecutors in the Polish city of Przemysl have concluded their investigation and filed charges against two Ukrainian train drivers employed by Ukrzaliznytsia. The drivers, identified as Roman R. and Volodymyr V., are accused of organizing the illegal border crossing of men eligible for military service. According to the prosecutors, their motive was financial gain, seeking a profit of $12,000.

Details of the Alleged Crime

The alleged crime took place in 2024. The drivers are suspected of hiding two Ukrainian men inside the locomotive of a train traveling from Odesa to Przemysl, thereby smuggling them across the state border without passport control from either Ukrainian or Polish border guards. Formal charges have already been brought, and under the criminal code, the offense carries a potential prison sentence ranging from six months to eight years.

This case highlights the ongoing issue of illegal border crossings and demonstrates the active efforts of law enforcement to uncover such crimes. It follows a recent pattern of crackdowns, including the arrest of two Territorial Recruitment Center officials in the Volyn region for taking bribes from draft evaders, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years. These incidents underscore the heightened focus on illegal migration and attempts to avoid military service, a particularly sensitive matter given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The situation reflects the complex challenges at the border as Ukraine continues its defense against the Russian invasion.
