The High Cost of Using Patriot Against Russian Missiles
Polish defense expert Piotr Kulpa has questioned whether Patriot systems are worth the expense when responding to Russian missile strikes. A Russian missile aimed at Kyiv costs around $1 million, he notes, while stopping one such missile typically requires about 2.5 interceptor launches, adding up to roughly $12.5 million. Kulpa argues that the true answer to Russian aggression is for Ukraine to build its own ballistic missiles, giving it the ability to strike military targets far inside Russia. This debate is especially relevant as Ukraine continues to face daily aerial assaults and must decide how to allocate limited defense resources.
Ukraine's Emerging Missile Programs
Kulpa also pointed to the serial production launch of the Sapsan missile complex, a system capable of exceeding Mach 5 and carrying a warhead of nearly half a ton. He said work is ongoing on two additional projects, Flamingo and Long Neptune, which could become important components of Ukraine's defensive strategy.
“Patriots are not the real answer. The real answer is own ballistics, which will hit Moscow one for one” — Piotr Kulpa.
For context, a single PAC-3 MSE interceptor now costs more than $5 million, according to the latest U.S. Army budget documents. American stockpiles of these missiles have fallen to about a quarter of the level the Pentagon says it requires, while global production stands at roughly 600 units per year. The United States, Middle Eastern countries, Germany, Japan, and Ukraine are all competing for the same limited supply. Washington has already used up a large portion of the arsenal that served as the backbone of its worldwide security commitments.
Kulpa's conclusions highlight the importance of a strategic shift in Ukraine's military policy, especially when it comes to reducing dependence on foreign air-defense systems. Developing domestic missile technology could become a decisive factor in strengthening national defense and ensuring long-term security. Continued progress on projects such as Sapsan, Flamingo, and Long Neptune may substantially change the regional balance of power and improve the effectiveness of Ukraine's military operations.
As Ukraine navigates its defense strategies, the debate over missile systems intensifies. Interestingly, Trump's recent remarks about the necessity of the Patriot system for the U.S. highlight the global implications of missile shortages and the need for countries to reassess their military capabilities amidst rising tensions.
