The June Full Moon of 2026
On the night of June 29–30, 2026, a Full Moon will appear over Ukraine, sitting lower on the horizon than any other full moon this year. It will reach its exact peak at 7:58 PM Eastern Daylight Time on June 29, which translates to 2:58 AM Kyiv time on June 30. This June full moon stands out because it coincides with the moon's proximity to apogee, making it appear smaller and dimmer. The satellite will look 12–14% smaller and fainter than usual, ranking as the second smallest full moon of 2026.
The Strawberry Moon Name
The term Strawberry Moon comes from the strawberry and wild berry harvest season in North America. Algonquian Native American tribes originally gave the June full moon this name. Other cultures refer to it by different titles, including:
- Green Corn Moon
- Hot Moon
- Berry Ripening Moon
It is worth noting that a full moon called the Strawberry Moon already appeared over Ukraine in June 2025.
Interestingly, due to the Moon illusion, it may look significantly larger when near the horizon than when high in the sky. Following the Strawberry Moon, the next full moon will occur on July 29, 2026. As a reminder, a blue micromoon rose over Ukraine in late May 2026, and the summer solstice took place on June 21. Thus, the June full moon promises to be a fascinating astronomical event worth observing.
“Astronomical events like the June full moon matter not only to scientists but also to the general public interested in nature and the cosmos.”
Observing the moon, especially when it displays unique features, offers people a chance to deepen their understanding of astronomy. Moreover, such events often spark curiosity about ecology and traditional cultures tied to natural cycles. In this way, the June full moon can serve as a catalyst for discussing and exploring both astronomical and cultural dimensions.
As we look forward to the enchanting Strawberry Moon, it's intriguing to recall the recent rare blue moon that graced our skies, an event that won’t occur again until 2053. These celestial happenings not only captivate stargazers but also provide a deeper appreciation for the rhythms of nature and the cosmos.
