Orange Alert Issued as Freezes Threaten to Destroy Half of Ukraine’s Fruit Harvest

Увага: Мороз може суттєво зашкодити фруктовим плантаціям України.

Frost Warning for Ukraine

Ukraine’s national weather agency, the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, has issued an orange-level danger warning as frost is forecast for the nights of April 28, 29, and 30. This alert signals a high risk of adverse impacts. The frost is expected across most of the country, with the exception of coastal areas and Crimea. Air temperatures during these freezing events are predicted to range from 0 to 3°C.

Impact on Crops

Meteorologists warn that up to half of the nation’s fruit crop could be lost. Among the most vulnerable are:

  • apricots
  • peaches
  • cherries
  • plums

The northern and central regions of Ukraine are expected to suffer the greatest damage. On April 28, the country will experience partly cloudy skies with scattered rain in some areas. Winds will come from the northwest at 7–12 m/s, with gusts reaching 15–20 m/s overnight in the eastern and northeastern parts of the country.

“The frost will damage flowering fruit trees,” weather forecasters stated.

This situation could have serious repercussions for Ukraine’s agricultural sector, as crop losses may threaten food security and economic stability in the affected regions. Farmers are advised to take steps to minimize risks, such as covering trees or using agronomic techniques to protect plants from freezing temperatures. This warning comes during a critical flowering period for many fruit trees, making the potential losses especially severe.

As the situation develops, severe winds and subzero temperatures are also expected in Ukraine, compounding the challenges faced by farmers. These harsh weather conditions could exacerbate the risks to crops already threatened by frost, highlighting the urgent need for protective measures in the agricultural sector.
