Death of Serhiy Osyka

On June 15, the passing of Ukrainian diplomat and politician Serhiy Osyka was announced. He held prominent roles in the Ukrainian government during the 1990s. Born on March 27, 1955, Osyka served as Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade of Ukraine.

From 1994 to 1995, he led the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, and from January to July 1995, he worked as Deputy Prime Minister. Between 1995 and 1999, Osyka served as Minister of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade. He was also a People’s Deputy of Ukraine in the IV, V, and VI convocations.

Throughout his career, Serhiy Osyka received numerous awards, including:

  • Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise
  • Order of Merit
  • Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Portuguese Republic
  • Grand Officer of the Order of the Liberator General San Martín of Argentina
As noted by Maryna Kinakh, 'For his work, Serhiy Osyka was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, the Order of Merit, and several international honors.'

A Loss for Ukraine’s Political Elite

Additionally, on June 15, the deaths of two other former Ukrainian lawmakers were reported. Vyacheslav Belsky, a People’s Deputy of Ukraine in the II convocation, passed away. In May 2026, Stepan Kubiv also died. He was a member of the European Solidarity faction, served as First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development, and previously headed the National Bank of Ukraine.
