Media Mogul Ted Turner Passes Away
Ted Turner, the visionary who launched the world’s first 24-hour news network, died Wednesday at age 87, surrounded by his family. A native of Ohio and longtime Atlanta businessman, Turner built a media empire that extended far beyond CNN. He pioneered the first cable superstation, launched channels dedicated to film and cartoons, and owned professional sports franchises, including the Atlanta Braves. His innovations reshaped how audiences consume news and entertainment globally.
Philanthropy and Lasting Legacy
Turner was also a prominent philanthropist and environmental advocate. He founded the United Nations Foundation and became one of the largest private landowners in the United States, using his resources to restore bison populations to the American West. His cultural footprint includes creating the animated series 'Captain Planet.' In 1991, Time magazine named him its Man of the Year, reflecting his profound influence on media and society. Although he eventually sold his television networks to Time Warner, Turner always regarded CNN as his greatest achievement.
In 2018, Turner was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia. Early in 2025, he was hospitalized with a mild case of pneumonia but recovered after treatment at a rehabilitation center. He is survived by five children, 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
