Massive fish kill reported in Borshchahivka community water bodies
An environmental emergency has been recorded in the water bodies of Sofiyivska Borshchahivka, part of the Borshchahivka territorial community. More than 3,000 kilograms of dead fish and other aquatic organisms have been found so far. The incident came to light on 10 July, when specialists from the State Ecological Inspection of the Capital District confirmed the die-off, collected water samples, and called in an investigative task force.
On 11 August, an official commission surveyed the affected water bodies and the surrounding area. The preliminary visual assessment indicated that sewage had been pumped into a storm-water drain, which may have allowed it to flow into public-access water bodies. Such incidents show how quickly failing or overloaded wastewater systems can threaten local ecosystems.

The full scale of damage to the state will be calculated once the inspections and laboratory analyses are complete. In the meantime, the Ministry of Economy has urged residents not to swim, fish, or have any contact with the water until its chemical parameters return to normal. People are also advised to avoid approaching the worst-affected areas where dead aquatic life has accumulated.
The fish kill has alarmed local residents and environmental groups. Events like this can point to weak wastewater treatment and poor water-resource management, with potentially serious environmental consequences for the entire region. Coordinated government action to remediate the damage and prevent similar incidents will be essential for protecting aquatic ecosystems and public health.
