Zelensky and Merz discussed the end of the war: what decisions will impact Europe's security

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, August 7, spoke about a phone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He emphasized that Ukraine and Germany are striving to end the war with a dignified peace that will determine the security conditions for Europe for decades to come. According to Zelensky, Ukraine is an integral part of Europe and is already negotiating its accession to the European Union.



'I spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Ukraine and Germany do see the necessity to end the war with a dignified peace as soon as possible, and the parameters for ending this war will determine the security conditions for Europe for decades. The war is in Europe, and Ukraine is an integral part of Europe; we are already negotiating our accession to the European Union. Therefore, Europe should be involved in the relevant processes'


The president also reported that he coordinated positions with Germany and plans to hold additional negotiations with Merz. An online meeting of the Security Council was announced to agree on joint views of Ukraine, Europe, and the USA. Zelensky emphasized the importance of a swift end to the war, noting that potential formats for meetings at the leader level for achieving peace were discussed yesterday as well.




In particular, the president expressed hope for a bold move from Russia regarding the end of the war. Ukraine expects positive meetings and is ready for constructive cooperation to achieve a common peace. In conclusion, Zelensky expressed gratitude to everyone who helps in this process and supports Ukraine.



During the phone conversation between the President of Ukraine and the Chancellor of Germany, the parameters for ending the war and further action plans were discussed, as well as joint positions agreed upon, and there are plans for further negotiations to achieve peace. Meetings at the leader level that could lead to positive outcomes are a discussed issue in the context of a swift end to the conflict. Ukraine expressed hope for constructive cooperation and involving Europe in the peacekeeping process.
