Barrier-Free Driving School students celebrate success

Two students from the Barrier-Free Driving School, run by Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs, have passed their practical driving exam at a Ministry of Internal Affairs service center and received their driver's licenses. Maksym Kulyk and Maksym Mykhailyshyn achieved this milestone under the "Without Barriers" initiative launched by Olena Zelenska to support people with disabilities. The program is part of a broader effort to make everyday life more accessible for Ukrainians with disabilities.

Maksym Kulyk and Maksym Mykhailyshyn: two paths, same goal

A combat veteran, Maksym Kulyk suffered severe injuries and went through numerous operations and long rehabilitation, yet he kept going and completed driving school. As he put it:

"If I set a goal, I always reach it" — Maksym Kulyk

Maksym Mykhailyshyn, who uses a wheelchair after a household injury, is also actively studying, working, and playing sports. On earning his license, he said:

"For me, this means mobility, independence, and new opportunities" — Maksym Mykhailyshyn

Both Maksyms can now drive on their own, opening up fresh possibilities. The "Without Barriers" initiative continues to help people with disabilities gain new skills and chances for a more independent life.

For Kulyk and Mykhailyshyn, receiving their licenses is a meaningful step that highlights the importance of including people with disabilities in society. Through this project, they have not only improved their mobility but also set an example for others facing similar challenges. It reflects the broader goal of creating an environment where all citizens have equal access, regardless of physical ability.

The journey to independence through driving is not unique to Maksym Kulyk and Maksym Mykhailyshyn. Another inspiring story is that of a Ukrainian woman who overcame medical skepticism to obtain her driver’s license. This highlights the determination and resilience of individuals with disabilities in pursuing their goals. To learn more about her remarkable achievement, read about her experience here.
