Petro Poroshenko Speaks Out on Security Challenges at Visby Conference

During the annual security conference in Visby, Sweden, Ukraine’s fifth president Petro Poroshenko highlighted Europe’s failure in countering Russia’s information warfare, attributing it to a widespread underestimation of the threat. He pointed out that half of German voters believe taxpayer funds supporting Ukraine are wasted, a perception he links directly to Russia’s success in shaping the information narrative.

Russia’s Growing Influence and Poroshenko’s Call for Action

Poroshenko drew attention to Russia’s expanding influence within the European Union through propaganda and allied political figures, emphasizing Moscow’s strong informational foothold in key European capitals. He argued that halting Russia’s aggression depends on three critical pillars:

  • the resilience of the Ukrainian people,
  • the capabilities of Ukraine’s Armed Forces,
  • and the continued support from international allies.

He also revealed shifts in Russia’s military strategy, noting that President Putin has repeatedly postponed plans to seize the Donbas region—from February to June, August, and now October 2026.

Poroshenko urged European media to send correspondents to Ukraine to provide accurate reporting, stressing that European audiences deserve to understand the severe crisis affecting Ukraine’s power grid and the looming risk of Europe facing paralysis within 12 hours.

“Europe could be paralyzed if we fail to invest in security together,”
he warned. Supporting Ukraine’s resistance, Poroshenko insisted, is a vital investment in the continent’s own safety.

“If you don’t invest in defending yourselves against Russia, it will take control through elections using democratic tools,”
he added, underscoring his leadership of the European Solidarity party and calling for decisive measures in information security.

Poroshenko’s remarks reflect deep concern over Russia’s growing leverage in Europe, which threatens not only Ukraine but democratic institutions across the region. His call for urgent action on information security highlights the need for unified international support to prevent destabilization. The challenges Europe faces could have profound implications for regional stability and security beyond Ukraine’s borders.

In light of Poroshenko's emphasis on the urgent need for European nations to enhance their military support for Ukraine, it is crucial to explore how this assistance can directly impact the region's security dynamics.
