Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Visit to the United States
Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s fifth president and leader of the European Solidarity party, posted a statement on social media reacting to Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s trip to the United States, his discussions with President Donald Trump, and the U.S. Senate’s vote on a fresh sanctions package targeting Russia and Iran. Poroshenko stressed that an immediate ceasefire must be the top priority to achieve peace. The visit took place on July 28–29, during which Zelenskyy held a private meeting with Trump at the White House that began at 9:47 a.m. local time. He also attended a farewell ceremony for Republican Senator Lindsey Graham at Washington National Cathedral, where he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—their first encounter since January 2025. Additionally, Zelenskyy conducted technical talks with executives from Lockheed Martin, a major defense contractor.
U.S. Senate Vote
As part of the visit, the U.S. Senate held its first procedural vote on a new sanctions bill that now includes Iran. The legislation was co-sponsored by the late Senator Lindsey Graham and received support from 86 lawmakers across both parties. It grants the U.S. president authority to impose tariffs of up to 500% on countries purchasing Russian oil. Final passage was postponed until the fall due to the House of Representatives’ recess. Poroshenko also recalled a joint trip to Shyrokyne with Senators John McCain and Amy Klobuchar, as well as the preparation of the Minsk agreements in 2014–2015. He emphasized that
“any meaningful peace process must begin with a ceasefire. That’s where I started when the Minsk agreements were being prepared in 2014–2015.”He added,
“as a responsible opposition, we are ready to support every government step that truly brings us closer to peace.”Poroshenko underlined the need for “a full, unconditional, comprehensive, and indefinite ceasefire as the first, most important, and entirely realistic step toward ending the war.”
Zelenskyy’s visit highlights Ukraine’s active diplomatic engagement on the global stage, particularly in countering Russian aggression and enhancing regional security. Poroshenko’s call for a ceasefire reflects a cross-party consensus in Ukraine on the urgency of peace, as well as the opposition’s willingness to endorse government actions, signaling unity on national security matters despite political differences.
