Porsche and Cylib Debut Battery Cell Featuring Cathodes Made from Recycled Materials

Introduction of a Revolutionary Battery Cell

On September 18, 2023, Porsche partnered with German firm Cylib to unveil a groundbreaking battery cell crafted entirely from recycled components. The cathode integrates reclaimed lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. Production has already begun on a pilot line, with sample cells undergoing comprehensive performance testing.

Upcoming Battery Recycling Initiative

Starting in 2025, a project focused on recycling high-voltage batteries will launch. By May 2026, used batteries collected from Porsche centers across Germany will be processed using Cylib's proprietary aqueous recycling technology. Each gram of recovered material will be meticulously tracked through dedicated material accounts. The recycled raw materials are slated for use in new battery cell production beginning in 2028, with a two-year industrial-scale validation phase to follow.

The European Union has set minimum recovery targets for key battery materials, including:

  • Cobalt
  • Copper
  • Lead
  • Nickel
  • Lithium

From February 18, 2027, every electric vehicle battery and batteries over 2 kWh sold in the EU will require a digital battery passport. This passport will provide around 71 data points covering chemical composition, lifecycle status, and recycled content.

"Achieving battery cells fully composed of recycled raw materials like lithium and cobalt marks a significant technological milestone," said Joachim Scharnagl.

This launch highlights the automotive sector's growing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Beyond aligning with EU regulatory standards, this effort could substantially reduce the ecological footprint of battery manufacturing. Successfully implementing battery recycling programs will decrease dependence on virgin materials and support the advancement of a circular economy within the electric vehicle industry.
