Veteran Dockworkers Defend Ukrainian Ports: How Air Defense Units Take Down Drones

Працівники портів України стійко захищають ключові об'єкти, в той час як військові підрозділи наводять порядок у небі.

Who Protects the Ports

Specialized air defense units, made up largely of port workers who are military veterans, are actively intercepting drones over Ukraine’s ports. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba reported that Russia has increased its drone strikes on port infrastructure more than tenfold. These air defense teams, predominantly formed from veterans of the full-scale invasion, operate under the organizational command of the Ukrainian Air Force.

Attacks on the Rise

According to official data, over 800 enemy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were detected above port infrastructure in the first four months of 2026. For comparison, only 75 UAVs were recorded during the same period last year. Oleksiy Kuleba stated:

“Ports remain among the key targets of attacks. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, more than 900 port infrastructure facilities have been damaged or partially destroyed, including 177 civilian vessels.” - Oleksiy Kuleba

These figures highlight the growing intensity of attacks, posing a serious threat to port security.

Ports Keep Operating

Despite constant threats, Ukrainian ports continue to function. Since the beginning of 2026, they have handled nearly 30 million tons of cargo. In March of the same year, civilian air defense units began protecting ports and Ukrzaliznytsia for the first time. Commanders of territorial community volunteer formations were granted the authority to form these air defense groups, reflecting active resource mobilization to safeguard critical infrastructure.

The surge in attacks on port infrastructure underscores the challenges Ukraine faces amid ongoing hostilities. The importance of ports to the national economy cannot be overstated, as they handle a significant share of cargo traffic. The security situation in this sector demands constant attention and support, since port operations are vital for maintaining economic stability and sustaining trade relations.

The increasing frequency of drone attacks on Ukrainian ports has led to innovative responses in air defense strategies. In this context, the formation of private air defense initiatives becomes crucial.
