Portugal's New Head of State
Portugal has elected António José Seguro as its new president, following a second-round runoff. The 63-year-old socialist, who secured a five-year mandate, defeated his far-right opponent, André Ventura. With 95% of ballots counted, Seguro won approximately 66% of the vote, while Ventura garnered 34%.
António José Seguro becomes the first socialist to hold the presidency in two decades. His predecessor was the conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who served two consecutive terms.
