Torrential Rains in Portugal Destroy A1 Motorway and Bridge, Force 3,000 to Evacuate

Злива в Португалії призвела до руйнування важливих транспортних шляхів та масової евакуації людей.

Collapse of Portugal's A1 Motorway

Heavy rainfall in Portugal has caused a section of the vital A1 motorway, which links Lisbon and Porto, to collapse. The incident occurred overnight on Wednesday when a dam breach on the Mondego River washed away the supports of a bridge near Coimbra, leading to the roadway's subsidence. Authorities had closed the road in advance, preventing any casualties on the highway itself.

Coimbra's Crisis and Government Response

In response to the deteriorating conditions, approximately 3,000 people were preemptively evacuated. A state of emergency has been declared in 69 municipalities across the country. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro traveled to Coimbra, where the situation is described as highly unstable.

Simultaneously, Luís Montenegro stated that "the country's resources are stretched to the limit." The Aguieira Dam is overflowing, adding further risk to the crisis. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are taking steps to ensure public safety. This event highlights the severe impact of extreme weather on critical infrastructure and public safety, a growing concern across Europe. The situation in Coimbra and other affected areas demands an urgent response and state support to prevent further complications. The declaration of a state of emergency underscores the severity and the need to concentrate resources on recovery and protection.
