EU Stands Firm Against Russian Threats

European Union ambassadors have dismissed ultimatums and threats from Russia's Foreign Ministry, reaffirming their commitment to remain in Kyiv. Diplomatic missions, including those of France and Poland, have refused to evacuate despite Kremlin warnings. This defiance comes amid heightened tensions following a major Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital.

Katarína Mathernová, the EU's ambassador to Ukraine, stated: 'Today's statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry is a masterpiece of hypocrisy. A regime that for years shelled residential buildings, museums, maternity hospitals, schools, and power plants has suddenly started speaking the language of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. The EU is not going anywhere. We are staying in Kyiv. We are staying with Ukraine. Threats against diplomats and international organizations are not a sign of strength. They embody desperation.' - Katarína Mathernová

The situation in Kyiv escalated after a massive Russian strike on the night of May 24. During this assault, Ukraine faced a barrage of missiles and drones, hitting over 50 locations, including:

  • residential complexes
  • a market in Lukyanivka
  • the National Art Museum

The residence of Albania's ambassador to Ukraine was also damaged. In the Kyiv region, Oreshnik missiles struck Bila Tserkva. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced the start of systematic strikes on Kyiv, drawing condemnation from the international community.

Poland's embassy emphasized that 'Russia continues to use terror against Ukraine, its civilian population, and foreign diplomatic missions in Kyiv, seeking to achieve political goals it cannot accomplish through military means.' Meanwhile, France's embassy declared: 'We condemn these latest irresponsible statements by the Russian Foreign Ministry. Moscow's threats, particularly regarding decision-making centers and foreign embassies in Ukraine, are unacceptable and contradict Russia's international obligations. Above all, they reflect the rapid approach of a dead end in which Russia's aggressive war has found itself.'

Conflict Escalation and Global Response

Amid the escalating conflict, acting U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Julie Davis visited strike sites in Kyiv after the attack, confirming the severity of the situation. Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán also condemned the overnight assault on Kyiv, highlighting shared international concern over regional security.

This situation underscores the growing tension between Russia and the international community regarding security and diplomatic relations. The envoys' refusal to evacuate Kyiv demonstrates support for Ukraine and the resolve of international partners to counter aggression. Recent events may significantly impact future diplomatic engagement and security strategies in the region, particularly in the context of escalating Russian military actions.

The resolve of the EU in Kyiv is not a new development; it follows a similar stance taken during previous threats, such as those made on May 9. In that instance, the European Union also reaffirmed its commitment to remain in Ukraine despite Russian pressure.
