Battlefield Challenges and Financial Backing for Ukraine
Russia is suffering military setbacks and depleting its reserves, according to Katarína Mathernová, the European Union's ambassador to Ukraine. She emphasized that Ukraine now has €90 billion from the EU allocated for both defense and budgetary support. As she put it,
“Ukraine currently has €90 billion at its disposal from the European Union for defense and budget support. Meanwhile, Russia is struggling, squeezing out its last reserves. It is horrific and bloody, but all credible sources say the same thing: Russia can no longer sustain this war.”- Katarína Mathernová.
Large-Scale Russian Attacks
The front-line situation has remained tense in recent days. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the Russian strikes, noting that Moscow launched 656 attack drones and 73 missiles of various types. On the night of June 2, 2026, Russia carried out a massive combined assault on Ukraine, using attack drones as well as air-, sea-, and ground-based missiles. The primary target was Kyiv, but shelling also hit Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava region, and other areas.
The attack left 13 people dead and more than 100 wounded. Over 500 emergency responders are working to clear the aftermath. Russia's Defense Ministry officially commented on the massive combined strike, claiming it used long-range precision weapons, including hypersonic missiles. The strikes damaged energy infrastructure in Kharkiv region and critical facilities in Kharkiv city.
This situation highlights the complexity and shifting dynamics of the war in Ukraine, as well as the crucial role of financial and defense support from the European Union. The availability of substantial resources—€90 billion—could enhance Ukraine's ability to continue defending itself and modernize its armed forces. At the same time, Russia's aggressive actions show the conflict escalating to new levels, resulting in significant casualties and destruction across Ukraine.
The ongoing conflict has seen a significant escalation, with recent reports indicating that Russia has launched a staggering number of missiles and drones against Ukraine. This intensification of hostilities underscores the urgent need for continued support, as highlighted by the EU's financial commitment.
