Ambassador of Ukraine to Estonia Comments
In an interview with the publication 'Glavcom,' Ukraine's Ambassador to Estonia, Volodymyr Boiechko, shared his perspective on the threat of separatism in the Estonian city of Narva and the Estonian government's reaction. He stressed that Ukraine's own experience demonstrates the necessity of taking any such developments seriously, especially those linked to separatism in nations sharing a border with Russia. According to the diplomat, Estonia also treats all provocations from the Russian Federation with great vigilance.
Volodymyr Boiechko noted that statements from Estonian officials and representatives of competent authorities regarding the potential creation of a 'Narva People's Republic' have been measured and appropriate.
"We must not play into the aggressor country's hands by amplifying such narratives,"he added. The ambassador also recalled that in 1993, there was already an attempt in Narva to implement a scenario similar to those in Transnistria or Abkhazia, but this attempt was unsuccessful.
The Situation in Estonia and Threats from Russia
Estonia, a frontline EU and NATO member, has budgeted for defense spending at 5.5% of its GDP this year. Boiechko also highlighted that Estonian special services have documented an information campaign on social media aimed at promoting a 'Narva People's Republic.' He simultaneously emphasized that while the majority of residents in the region are Russian-speaking, the use of the Russian language is not in itself evidence of a pro-Russian stance. This context is crucial for understanding the complex social dynamics in Estonia's border regions.
The ambassador further observed that, unlike in Moldova and Georgia, separatist sentiments have not materialized in Estonia.
"Especially after the example of the 'LPR'-'DPR,' Estonians are unlikely to desire anything similar for themselves,"he remarked. Volodymyr Boiechko also pointed out that there may be so-called 'zhduny' (wait-and-see individuals) in the region—people who, despite all the troubles, remain in a state of expectation, not realizing they could become victims of aggression.
Furthermore, a significant incident occurred on March 18, when a Russian Su-30 fighter jet violated Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland. This event further underscores the regional tensions and the Estonian government's security concerns, reflecting a pattern of Russian pressure on NATO's eastern flank.
Volodymyr Boiechko's statements reflect Ukraine's growing attention to the situation in Estonia, particularly in the context of intensified Russian propaganda and separatist-related threats. Ukraine's experience, having faced similar challenges, underscores the importance of timely response and monitoring in high-risk regions. Estonian authorities continue to implement measures to ensure national security and stability, a priority amid the worsening international climate.
In light of the ongoing security challenges, it is essential to consider the broader context of Estonia's commitment to regional stability. Recently, the nation has pledged over €100 million in defense assistance to Ukraine, reflecting its proactive stance against external threats. This financial support underlines Estonia's dedication to strengthening its own defenses while aiding its neighbors.
