Ukraine's Ambassador Explains Israel's Cautious Stance Toward Russia

Посол України коментує обережну позицію Ізраїлю щодо Росії.

An Interview with Ukraine's Ambassador to Israel

In an interview with the publication Glavcom, Ukraine's Ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, discussed Israel's position regarding Russia. This comes amid attacks involving modernized Russian 'Geran' drones. Korniychuk stated that Israel must maintain a delicate balance in its foreign policy, as the country is small, comparable in size to the Kyiv region. He noted that Israel cannot afford to make strong moves against Russia, even while facing such attacks. Israel's strategic calculus is shaped by its regional security concerns and complex international relationships.

Modern Threats and Ukrainians in Israel

Korniychuk highlighted that modernized 'Geran' drones equipped with artificial intelligence, making them faster and more precise, are reaching Israel. He also emphasized that over the past four years, Iran has supplied Russia with ballistic missiles worth more than $4 billion. In turn, Russia signed a $0.5 billion agreement to supply Iran with modern multiple rocket launch systems during the Middle East war, a deal it is gradually fulfilling. This military cooperation creates a significant security challenge for the region.

Regarding Ukrainians in Israel, the Ukrainian embassy has registered approximately 25 individuals wishing to leave the country. Korniychuk pointed out that Ukrainians are actively using alternative exit routes, including through open borders with Egypt and Jordan.

The situation described by Ukraine's ambassador underscores the complexity of Israel's foreign policy amid geopolitical challenges, particularly from Russia and Iran.

Yevgen Korniychuk

As a small nation, Israel is forced to carefully balance international alliances and national interests, which can affect its response to aggression from Russia. Furthermore, the departure of Ukrainians from Israel via alternative routes indicates the existing difficulties faced by Ukrainians amid rising regional tensions.

As tensions rise in the region, Israel is also looking to strengthen its diplomatic ties with Ukraine amidst ongoing threats. The recent Iranian attacks have prompted Israel to seek dialogue with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, highlighting the intricate web of international relations that shapes Israel's security strategy.
