Ukraine's Ambassador to Israel Compares Air Raid Warning Systems

Посол України в Ізраїлі порівнює системи оповіщення про повітряні загрози.

Ambassador's Analysis of Air Raid Protocols

In an interview with the Ukrainian outlet 'Glavcom', Ukraine's Ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, contrasted the duration of air raid alerts and the effectiveness of early warning systems in his host country and Ukraine. He provided figures on Israeli casualties, noting that over two weeks of rocket attacks, 14 people were killed—eight of them in a single strike on a building near Jerusalem. Approximately 750 others were wounded, many of them seriously. The ambassador observed that Israel does not release precise public data on civilian fatalities, injuries, or the scale of destruction.

Diverging Approaches to Civilian Protection

Korniychuk pointed out that Israel has experienced far fewer air raid sirens this year compared to previous years. He explained that all regions of the country are equipped with bomb shelters, where residents typically take cover for 15 to 20 minutes.

“This year, there are significantly fewer air raid alarms than last. Yet there are still around 750 wounded, many in serious condition. Unlike Ukraine, Israel does not provide precise figures on the number of civilian dead, wounded, or the extent of destruction,” stated Yevgen Korniychuk.

The ambassador also revealed that Israel had transferred one of its early warning systems to Ukraine, but the Kyiv City Military Administration declared the provided system unsuitable.

“We urged the Israeli leadership to sell us all the necessary equipment for early warning. However, I am not certain these systems are operating as intended in Ukraine,” Korniychuk said.

Furthermore, he noted that only about 25 Ukrainians have registered with the embassy for evacuation from Israel. Most Ukrainian citizens are using alternative exit routes, such as crossing open borders with Egypt and Jordan.
“This is not a pleasant situation for me, because we should still protect our people and listen to those with more experience,” the ambassador emphasized.

Korniychuk added that Israel refrains from openly criticizing Moscow, as it must maintain a careful balance in its diplomatic relations.

The ambassador's comments highlight the distinct challenges faced by nations under threat from aerial attacks. His comparison underscores the critical role of tailored and reliable early warning technology in saving civilian lives during military conflicts. The situation also illustrates the complex diplomatic calculations nations must make during times of regional instability.

In light of the ongoing discussions about air raid protocols, it's also important to consider the broader implications of Israel's diplomatic stance towards Russia. The ambassador's insights into Israel's cautious approach provide a deeper understanding of the geopolitical dynamics at play, particularly in relation to Ukraine’s security challenges.
