Ambassador's Attire at Iftar Dinner Triggers Diplomatic Controversy
Ukraine's Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman, Olha Selykh, has ignited a public scandal over her choice of outfit at an Iftar dinner in Saudi Arabia. The event, a traditional evening meal to break the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan, drew sharp criticism from Ukrainians on social media. Her ensemble—consisting of tight white pants, a white top, and a gold cape—was widely deemed inappropriate for the official function and a breach of expected dress code. This incident highlights the delicate balance diplomats must maintain between personal style and cultural respect.
Expert Analysis and Public Backlash
Olha Selykh, originally from Volyn, was appointed as Ukraine's new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Oman by a decree from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy published on July 21, 2025. Her previous roles include heading the NGO 'Velychnyi Podil,' serving as Vice President for Government Relations and Business at the public organization 'Business Ukrainian Women,' and chairing the board of the condominium 'Liberty Lux.'
Political analyst Viktor Ukolov criticized the ambassador's appearance, stating it violated diplomatic dress norms.
"The Omanis (or more precisely, the Saudis who invited her) were probably shocked, as they invited her to an Iftar—the dinner after a day of fasting and prayer during Ramadan. Of course, this is a wild violation of all rules and even a provocation. But what did we expect—this glamorous woman was never a diplomat,"Ukolov remarked.
Social media users echoed this outrage, questioning why the ambassador was unaware of appropriate business attire. Many commentators asked why Ukraine's representative at such a significant meeting was dressed improperly, stressing the importance of respecting the culture and traditions of the host country. Others focused on her overall image, emphasizing the necessity of adhering to diplomatic etiquette and maintaining a professional appearance that meets international standards.
This case underscores the critical importance of observing cultural norms and traditions in diplomatic relations. It also raises questions about the preparation and professionalism of diplomatic appointees. Given that effective diplomacy requires sensitivity to cultural differences, the controversy surrounding Olha Selykh's attire could potentially impact her personal reputation and Ukraine's image on the global stage.
