Dzhigan’s Trip to Israel
The Ukrainian Embassy in Israel has formally denounced the visit of rapper Dzhigan (Artem Ustymenko), who is under sanctions imposed by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), openly backs Russia’s military aggression, and holds a Russian passport. In response, the embassy sent a diplomatic note to Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, urging a boycott of any events featuring Dzhigan. His trip was organized as part of an initiative by Israel’s Ministry of Tourism aimed at the Russian market. The Israeli Tourism Ministry stated that Dzhigan traveled to the country with his children to explore his Jewish roots.
Dzhigan has been under official Ukrainian sanctions since January 2023. Born in Odesa, he has publicly voiced support for Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine. In March 2024, he displayed his Russian passport and endorsed Russian President Vladimir Putin during the elections. Earlier, in May 2021, he was added to the 'Myrotvorets' database for traveling to Crimea and participating in propaganda activities. Russian media reported in 2023 that Dzhigan might seek an Israeli passport.
Statement from the Ukrainian Embassy
The Ukrainian Embassy stated: 'Despite being born in Odesa, Dzhigan openly supports Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine and mocks Russians who refuse to fight against our country.'
The embassy’s statement also criticized Israel, noting that 'an official invitation extended to someone who backs Russian aggression, remains silent about the deaths of his former compatriots, and ignores the daily bombings of Ukrainian cities—including Odesa—is unacceptable and immoral.' It further emphasized the need to 'halt all official cooperation with supporters of Russian terror' and called on Israelis to boycott events involving Dzhigan and other pro-war propagandists.
This incident highlights growing tensions between Ukraine and Israel, particularly regarding the latter’s stance on Russia’s war. Dzhigan’s visit has sparked outrage not only within Ukrainian society but also in diplomatic circles, as it symbolizes Israel’s controversial position on the conflict. The Ukrainian Embassy is urging international action to counter harmful influences that could undermine Ukraine’s national interests.
