Tragedy Strikes Kyiv Reservoir
Rescue teams have been searching for a week for a driver whose vehicle broke through the ice on the Kyiv Reservoir near the village of Lebedivka on February 5. While the body of the passenger was recovered from the sunken UAZ vehicle, the driver was not found inside the cabin. The car was located by rescuers on the same day the accident occurred in the Vyshhorod district. This incident highlights the severe dangers of venturing onto frozen bodies of water, a recurring hazard during the region's harsh winters.
Challenging Search Conditions
The search for the missing driver is being hampered by freezing temperatures, poor visibility, and complex underwater conditions. A diving unit from the State Emergency Service (DSNS) is working daily on the ice, conducting multiple dives into the frigid water. To date, approximately 50,000 square meters of the water surface have been scoured, but the efforts have yet to locate the missing man.
"Ice that appears solid may not support the weight of a car, and risky recreation can cost a life. No thrill or adrenaline rush is worth a human life," stated DSNS representatives.
In a stark contrast to the tragedy, German photographer Till Mayer published a series of photos taken on the Kyiv Reservoir during the deep freeze. The images documented two travelers who completed a roughly 27-kilometer trek across the frozen expanse on the route Kozarovychi–Lebedivka–Kozarovychi. The participants reported the ice thickness exceeded 20 cm, with the distance between the opposite shores in the Vyshhorod district being approximately 13.5 km.
Despite the extensive efforts of the rescue services, the search operation continues, and no new results have been reported at this time.
This tragedy underscores the peril of going onto ice, especially under variable weather and temperatures that can affect its stability. Rescuers urge the public to exercise caution and avoid risky situations that could lead to loss of life. The situation also draws attention to the importance of professional training and readiness for emergency services operating in extreme conditions.
