Lviv Train Station Incident: 20-Year-Old Fatally Struck by Uzhhorod-Odesa Passenger Train

Трагічний випадок на вокзалі у Львові: молодий чоловік загинув під колесами потяга, що курсує між Ужгородом та Одесою.

Tragedy at Pidzamche Railway Station

A 20-year-old local resident lost his life after being hit by a passenger train traveling from Uzhhorod to Odesa at Lviv's Pidzamche station early on May 23. The incident occurred around 2:10 AM, and the victim died at the scene before medical help could arrive. This tragic event highlights ongoing safety concerns on Ukraine's railways, where such accidents remain a pressing issue.

Authorities have launched a criminal investigation under Article 276, Part 3 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which covers violations of safety regulations for railway, water, or air transport operations. If convicted, the responsible party faces 5 to 10 years in prison. The investigation is being led by the investigative department of Police Unit No. 1 under the Lviv District Police Department No. 1, which is working to determine all the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This tragedy comes amid other recent incidents in Lviv, including a balcony collapse on May 17 that left a resident with bruises and psychological trauma. However, law enforcement's primary focus is currently on the railway station fatality, where a young man died after being struck by the train.

“In connection with the incident, investigators from Police Unit No. 1 of the Lviv District Police Department No. 1 have opened criminal proceedings under Part 3 of Article 276 (Violation of safety rules for the operation of railway, water, or air transport) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The penalty ranges from five to ten years in prison. Police are working to establish all the details of the event,” a police statement said.

The investigation remains active as authorities seek to clarify every aspect of the case.

Transport Safety Concerns

The fatal accident at Pidzamche station underscores the critical need for strict adherence to transport safety rules. Officials and law enforcement must take steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future, as passenger security should always be a top priority. With increasing passenger traffic, ensuring proper infrastructure and enforcing safety standards on the railways is more important than ever.

This recent tragedy at Pidzamche station is not an isolated incident, as safety concerns continue to plague Ukraine’s railways. Just days earlier, a train engineer lost his life when a Kyiv–Uzhhorod service derailed in the Lviv region, raising alarms about the safety protocols in place.
