Why an Old Router Can Drag Down Your Internet Speed

Even with internet plans offering 200 or 500 Mbps, an outdated router can severely limit your connection speed. Routers function like small computers, equipped with processors, memory, and operating systems. Devices that are 5 to 7 years old often struggle to handle the demands of today’s internet usage. Moreover, continuous operation causes them to overheat and suffer from power fluctuations, further degrading performance. Over time, the power supply unit in an old router may deliver unstable current, worsening the situation.

Many older routers operate on the crowded 2.4 GHz frequency band, which typically has only three channels. This frequency is often congested with numerous neighboring networks, causing interference and reducing connectivity speeds. In contrast, modern routers come with gigabit ports essential for fiber-optic internet, since 100 Mbps ports cannot support the higher speeds fiber connections provide.

Choosing the Right Router for Your Home Network

When selecting a new router, prioritize three key features:

  • Gigabit Ethernet ports to handle fast wired connections;
  • Dual-band operation with support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) to ensure faster and more reliable wireless performance;
  • MU-MIMO technology, which enables multiple devices to connect simultaneously without lag.

Additionally, consider routers with Mesh networking capability, which creates a unified network from multiple devices to provide extensive coverage across large spaces.

Setting up a new router is usually as simple as replacing the cable in the WAN port. Depending on the internet service, you might have a dynamic IP address that connects automatically or use PPPoE, requiring a username and password. Ukrainian ISPs may tie your service to the router’s MAC address; in such cases, you can use the router’s MAC cloning feature to replicate the old address and avoid service interruptions.

Old routers don’t have to be discarded—they can serve as access points, repeaters, or switches to expand your home network. Keeping a spare router can also be a lifesaver during power surges or if your main device fails, highlighting the value of updating your equipment.

If you encounter internet issues, first verify whether your connection uses dynamic IP or PPPoE. Follow troubleshooting steps such as entering your login credentials, registering the new device with your provider, and cloning the MAC address if needed.

Keeping up with evolving communication technologies requires regularly upgrading hardware to maintain a stable internet experience.
