Cyberattack Cripples Iraq's Electricity Supply
A major technical failure has caused a nationwide power outage across all of Iraq's provinces. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has attributed the total collapse of the grid to a cyberattack originating from Israel, which targeted the country's power infrastructure. This incident highlights the persistent vulnerability of Iraq's critical systems, which have long suffered from underinvestment and instability.
The blackout affected every region, disabling the majority of power transmission lines. Even the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, home to the U.S. Embassy, was plunged into darkness. An official from the ministry's control unit confirmed the complete failure of the national electricity system.
"The attack was aimed at the power grid's infrastructure, resulting in a total network collapse and blackouts in a series of provinces," stated an employee from the ministry's dispatch unit.
The cyberattack initially struck power stations in the provinces of Basra, Dhi Qar, Muthanna, and Maysan, triggering outages across the entire country. A separate cyberattack also targeted a power station in southern Baghdad. In response, technical teams from the electricity ministry have begun repair work in an effort to restore power.
