Fire Hazard and Thunderstorms: Ukraine’s Weather Outlook for May 9–13

Пожежна небезпека та грози: Прогноз погоди в Україні на період з 9 по 13 травня

Weather Forecast for Ukraine: May 9–13

From May 9 through May 13, Ukraine will experience a mix of thunderstorms and daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C, according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center. An extreme fire danger level has been declared across most of the country for May 9–11, excluding Crimea, Volyn, and Zakarpattia regions. This warning comes as a large wildfire in Chernihiv region has already burned 4,300 hectares, with flames spreading toward Russia and hostile drones spotted near the area, which remains heavily mined.

Day-by-Day Breakdown

On Saturday, May 9, daytime temperatures across Ukraine will reach 20–25°C, dropping to 7–12°C overnight. Western regions will be cooler, with highs of 13–18°C. Winds will shift from southwest to northwest, blowing at 5–10 m/s.

Short-lived rain and thunderstorms are expected in most northern and central areas, as well as in the eastern and Carpathian regions during the day. In Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, skies will be partly cloudy with isolated brief rain, and thunderstorms are possible across the oblast. Kyiv’s daytime high will be 21–23°C, with overnight lows of 10–12°C.

For Kyiv Oblast, the heaviest rainfall is forecast on May 10. No precipitation is expected on May 11 or during the night of May 12, with overnight temperatures dropping to 3–8°C on May 11.

Fire danger remains critical. The blaze in Chernihiv’s border area has consumed 4,300 hectares and is advancing toward Russia. Enemy drones are circling the fire zone, and the region near the border is heavily mined. The fire hazard alert was issued on May 8, threatening both natural resources and public safety.

The combination of volatile weather and active wildfires underscores the importance of monitoring natural disasters for civilian safety. While the forecasted rain may help reduce the risk of new fires, the extreme danger level remains in effect. Amid ongoing military conflict and environmental threats, timely information and support are essential to minimize potential harm.

As the dangerous weather conditions unfold, it's crucial to stay informed about the evolving situation. A recent yellow alert was issued for Ukraine, warning residents of severe storms anticipated in the coming days. This adds to the urgency of monitoring both the weather and wildfire developments to ensure safety across the country.
