Metro Staff Deny Defibrillator to Dying Man, Sparking Outrage in Kyiv

Співробітники метро відмовили у наданні дефібрилятора чоловіку, що потребував термінової допомоги, викликавши обурення в Києві.

Tragedy Unfolds Outside Polytechnic Institute Metro Station

An incident near the Polytechnic Institute metro station in Kyiv has sparked widespread outrage after metro employees refused to provide a defibrillator for a man who collapsed and later died. The tragedy occurred on Saturday, May 8, at approximately 5:15 PM. A first aid instructor and a passerby who was a rescuer began performing CPR, but metro personnel and a duty police officer twice denied their requests for an automated external defibrillator (AED). The device was only obtained 20 minutes later, after an ambulance team had already arrived on the scene. Using an AED within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest can boost survival chances by 50-70%. The Kyiv Metro municipal enterprise has confirmed the incident and is conducting an internal investigation, noting that AEDs were introduced to the subway system in 2020.

Fatal Incidents on Transport Networks

Separately, in the Obukhiv district of the Kyiv region, another fatal accident occurred. A commuter train traveling between Kyiv and Vasylkiv struck and killed a 70-year-old woman who was walking along the railway tracks near the Cherkes station. This case underscores the dangers pedestrians face on railway lines.

In Vinnytsia, a deadly incident was reported when a 14-year-old teenager was electrocuted on the roof of an electric train. The accident happened on May 4; the boy sustained burns covering approximately 70% of his body and was hospitalized in critical condition at the Pirogov Regional Hospital's thermal injury center. These cases highlight the serious life-threatening risks that arise from failing to follow transport safety rules.

Together, these incidents underscore the critical need for effective rescue systems and safety measures on public transport. The refusal to provide a defibrillator at a crucial moment, along with dangerous situations on railway tracks, points to the urgent necessity of raising awareness and training personnel in first aid, as well as enforcing safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Such incidents are not isolated; recent events in the Kyiv region have also highlighted the perils associated with transport systems. In a tragic report, three individuals lost their lives after being struck by trains, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols. These occurrences serve as a stark reminder of the critical importance of effective emergency response and adherence to safety measures across all public transportation networks.
