Orthodox Church of Ukraine Commemorates St. Sisoes the Great

Православна церква України вшановує пам'ять святого Сисоєї Великого.

Honoring the Memory of St. Sisoes the Great

On July 6, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine observes the feast day of St. Sisoes the Great according to the New Julian calendar. A 4th-5th century Egyptian hermit and disciple of St. Anthony the Great, Sisoes lived from approximately 367 to 429 AD. After his teacher's death, he retreated to the cave where Anthony once dwelt, dedicating himself entirely to prayer and ascetic practices.

On this day, believers offer prayers to St. Sisoes, seeking his intercession. One such prayer reads:

“O venerable Father Sisoes! Righteous ascetic and our advocate before the Lord! Look upon us with kindness, hear our prayers, cleanse our hearts from all evil, and grant us patience and humility. Pray for us, that the Lord may protect us from the evil one, from all misfortunes and illnesses. Bless our labors, keep our families in peace and harmony. Amen.”

Folk Beliefs and Signs

Beyond its religious significance, this day is also tied to traditional folk beliefs and omens. For example:

  • heavy morning dew on the grass predicts a good harvest of cucumbers and nuts;
  • if the nightingale falls silent, it signals that it is time to harvest barley;
  • rain falling on this day is seen as a sign that autumn will be wet;
  • if yellow leaves appear on the trees, an early autumn can be expected;
  • yellow clouds on the horizon may indicate an approaching downpour.

Thus, on July 6, as they honor St. Sisoes the Great, believers not only turn to the saint in prayer but also observe traditions and signs associated with the day.

Commemorating St. Sisoes the Great is a key aspect of Orthodox spiritual life, where the faithful engage both in prayer and in folk customs. This day also serves as a reminder of the connection between religious faith and natural cycles, reflecting a deep understanding of humanity's bond with nature. Participation in such practices helps preserve cultural heritage and strengthens community bonds through shared values and traditions.

As the Orthodox Church of Ukraine honors St. Sisoes the Great, it's also important to reflect on the teachings and legacy of other revered figures in the faith. For instance, the commemoration of Saint Athanasius the Athonite offers further insights into the rich spiritual heritage that shapes the beliefs and practices of the faithful. Exploring these connections not only deepens one’s understanding of the church's history but also enhances the spiritual journey of believers.
