Ukraine's and Romania's Heads of Government Speak by Phone

Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky held a phone conversation with Romania's Prime Minister Luca Niculescu to discuss the recent Russian strike on a civilian vessel near Romanian waters. The attack resulted in the death of one Ukrainian sailor, four wounded, three missing, and six rescued. Koretsky expressed gratitude to Romania for its firm condemnation of this violent act.

Strengthening Collaboration Between Kyiv and Bucharest

The leaders also explored opportunities to enhance cooperation in defense, energy, and logistics sectors. Koretsky highlighted the urgency of accelerating projects aimed at expanding railway infrastructure, improving river transport routes, and increasing cargo handling capacity. He further suggested establishing a framework for intergovernmental consultations to deepen bilateral ties.

This discussion marked the first official exchange since Luca Niculescu's appointment as Romania's Prime Minister. Koretsky extended an invitation for Niculescu to visit Kyiv, emphasizing the critical importance of ongoing partnership. Romania has consistently backed Ukraine since the outset of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The heightened tensions in the Black Sea region, driven by Russian aggression, underscore the necessity for closer cooperation between Ukraine and Romania. Addressing logistics and energy challenges can significantly bolster the economic resilience and defense capabilities of both nations amid persistent threats. Institutionalizing intergovernmental dialogue could serve as a pivotal step toward enhancing regional security.
