Accusations Against Israel
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has leveled war crimes accusations against Israel following the death of journalist Amal Khalil in an airstrike in southern Lebanon. The incident occurred during a wave of aerial attacks that also wounded journalist Zeinab Faraj. While Israeli military officials acknowledged that two journalists were injured, they denied deliberately targeting media personnel.
Amal Khalil, a reporter for the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, became the fourth media worker killed in Israeli strikes on Lebanon since March. The building where the journalists were located was hit during the bombardment. Red Cross workers transported Faraj to a hospital under hostile fire, according to reports.
Perspectives and Statements
Israeli military sources stated they did not block rescue teams from reaching the area and said the incident is under review. They added that in southern Lebanon, two vehicles were observed leaving a military structure used by Hezbollah. The military attacked one of the vehicles and the building from which people had fled.
Hezbollah leader Naim Kassem outlined conditions for peace amid a 10-day ceasefire. He declared that fighters remain fully combat-ready and have no intention of disarming. Hezbollah's key demands include:
- a permanent halt to Israeli attacks on targets in Lebanon;
- the complete withdrawal of IDF units from Lebanese territory.
Israel has previously stated its intention to maintain control over significant areas in southern Lebanon even after the active phase of the conflict ends.
Nawaf Salam emphasized: “Attacks on journalists and obstructing rescue teams from reaching them, followed by repeated strikes on those teams after their arrival, constitute war crimes.”
Meanwhile, Israeli military officials assured that they “do not target journalists and act to minimize harm to them while ensuring the safety of our troops.”
This incident highlights the escalating tensions between Lebanon and Israel and raises serious questions about the safety of journalists working in conflict zones. The death of Amal Khalil is just one of many examples of the dangers media professionals face during armed conflicts. The rise in attacks on journalists could have severe implications for press freedom and conflict reporting in the region. At the same time, the positions of Hezbollah and Israel regarding further military actions suggest that the conflict may continue to escalate unless a peace agreement is reached.
The situation in Lebanon continues to escalate, with Hezbollah calling on the Lebanese government to cease negotiations with Israel following the tragic deaths of police officers. This development highlights the growing tensions in the region and the complex interplay of military and political dynamics, as both sides navigate the ongoing conflict.
