Milestones in the Awards' History
The awards trace their roots back to 2004, when the television show 'Our Song' first aired. In 2012, a telethon titled 'The Song Unites Us!' set a Guinness World Record by broadcasting continuously for 110 hours, 3 minutes, and 27 seconds across 150 countries. The ceremony went international in 2017, taking place in Warsaw, Poland. Between 2019 and 2022, several award events were held, including a 2021 ceremony on World Embroidery Day under the slogan 'Let’s Keep the Ukrainian Wave Together!' The most recent milestone event occurred on February 16, 2022, at the National Palace of Arts 'Ukraina'.
This year’s edition is timed to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. Mykhailo Poplavskyi stated:
'The Ukrainian Song of the Year is a mega-project that has been championing Ukrainian song culture and forging Ukrainian identity for over 20 years. This year’s awards will bring together legendary artists and emerging performers who now represent Ukraine on the global stage, significantly support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, fight for independence, and uplift the nation’s spirit. In addition to singers, honorary recognitions will go to poets and composers who create musical content.' – Mykhailo Poplavskyi
Winners are selected based on:
- popularity
- cultural contribution
- civic stance
Key award categories include 'Pride of Ukrainian Song', 'Legend of Ukrainian Song', 'Soul of Ukrainian Song', 'Hope of Ukrainian Song', 'Guarantor of Ukrainian Song', and others. Poplavskyi emphasized the role of Ukrainian music in fostering patriotism:
'Through Ukrainian song, we cultivate a sense of patriotism in young people, promote the Ukrainian language, support emerging performers, and unite Ukrainian society. This is the future! Without Ukrainian culture, song, and language, there is no nation. Let’s keep the Ukrainian wave together! Glory to Ukraine!' – Mykhailo Poplavskyi
The 'Ukrainian Song of the Year' awards stand as a cornerstone of the country’s cultural heritage, honoring achievements in music and songwriting. Its history reflects the resilience and enduring popularity of Ukrainian music, which continues to unite people and reinforce national identity. Given the current challenges facing the nation, the awards also highlight the power of art to inspire patriotic values among youth and maintain cultural cohesion across society.
As the excitement builds for this year's Ukrainian Song of the Year awards, it's worth noting how the music scene continues to evolve and respond to current events.
