Russian Coaches Receive Georgian State Honor

Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has awarded the Order of Honor to Russian coaches Eteri Tutberidze and Pavel Sliusarenko for their role in preparing Georgia's Olympic team for the 2026 Winter Games. The award ceremony took place without the coaches present, with the orders being received by Mariam Giorgobiani, the president of the Georgian Figure Skating Federation. This recognition highlights the complex international relationships that continue within global sports.

Historic Performance at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan were held from February 6 to 22. At these Games, a Georgian pair won a silver medal in figure skating, marking the first time in the nation's history. The Georgian figure skating team also achieved a significant milestone by placing fourth in the team event.

In 2022, Eteri Tutberidze commented on the situation regarding Russian skaters, stating she believed they were unfairly barred from competition. She also argued that

“ratings should not be updated while they are not performing”
— a remark made in the context of restrictions faced by Russian athletes in international events.

The report also mentions Russian speed skater Aleksandra Saiutina, who was recognized as a neutral athlete by the International Skating Union (ISU). Saiutina attended Russian President Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly on February 29, 2024. Video from the event showed her present alongside Putin's associates and Russian military personnel involved in the war against Ukraine. Russian cross-country skier Veronika Stepanova also shared her impressions of the event on her Instagram.

The decision to honor the Russian coaches in Georgia underscores the intricate dynamics of international sport, where political circumstances frequently intersect with competition. Celebrating the achievements of Georgian athletes at the Olympics also shows how nations can unite through sport despite geopolitical tensions. This case reflects broader trends where national interests and international relations are deeply intertwined in the sporting world.
