Call to Accelerate Support for Ukraine

Marcos Perestrello, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, has urged allied nations to speed up their assistance to Ukraine, emphasizing that delays are exacting a heavy toll on both the front lines and the home front. Speaking online at the Kyiv Security Forum, Perestrello highlighted that Russia is deliberately striking civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, particularly energy facilities. He also pointed to support for Russia from North Korea and Iran, while labeling China as the Kremlin's most significant enabler in the war.

Urgent Action Is Critical

Perestrello stressed the need for immediate action, stating that

“the lesson for allied countries is clear: we must be faster, stronger, and more decisive in our support for Ukraine.”
He explained that
“the consequences of delays are not measured in abstractions, but in destroyed homes, ruined infrastructure, and lost human lives.”
Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, also addressed the forum, underscoring the vital importance of national unity within Ukrainian society.

Perestrello noted that backing Ukraine is not just one priority among many; it is a test of democratic societies’ ability to respond swiftly to threats. He added that

“this is not simply about delivering equipment. It is about aligning our industrial pace with the realities of modern warfare.”
Every delay comes at a cost, and
“every acceleration saves lives.”
In closing, he remarked that
“acceleration is not escalation. Acceleration is responsibility.”

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of advancing NATO’s PURL mechanism and defense-industrial cooperation to shorten the timelines for weapons deliveries. Perestrello underlined the need to unite societies despite internal divisions, as internal cohesion is critical to successfully countering the aggressor.

Marcos Perestrello’s address at the Kyiv Security Forum underscores the pressing need for international support for Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression. His appeal to allies to expedite military aid reflects a growing recognition that delays can have deadly consequences for Ukraine’s people and infrastructure. With support for Russia rising from countries like North Korea and Iran, the call for unity and rapid action becomes even more essential to ensure regional stability.

As the call for a more robust response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine intensifies, support from global leaders continues to evolve. This highlights the importance of unified action among democracies to effectively counter threats and provide timely assistance to those affected by the conflict.
