Romania Condemns Russian-Linked Sabotage on Its Soil
Romanian President Nicușor Dan has strongly condemned Russia’s involvement in sabotage activities within Romania, highlighting the arson attack at the Carfil industrial complex on September 14. According to Romania’s Intelligence Service (SRI) and the National Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), the fire was orchestrated by a sabotage network coordinated from Russia. The group included three suspects—two Belarusian citizens and one Ukrainian citizen—all residing within European Union countries. Authorities have arrested two of the suspects in Germany.
President Dan emphasized that such acts represent a serious breach of Romania’s sovereignty and security.
“I categorically condemn any involvement of the Russian Federation in sabotage operations on Romanian territory. These actions are unacceptable,”he stated. He further noted that Russia is waging a hybrid war against Europe, employing tactics ranging from cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns to acts of sabotage.
Rising Threats in the Black Sea Region
Dan underscored a recent escalation in Russian threats, particularly targeting civilian shipping in the Black Sea.
“For years, Russia has deployed a wide array of methods to undermine European democracies,”he remarked. The president warned that these ongoing operations are part of a deliberate and coordinated campaign designed to sow discord within societies and weaken European nations’ resolve to safeguard their security.
In response, Romania plans to deepen cooperation with NATO and the European Union to bolster national defense. “The Romanian government will act decisively to prevent such incidents, identify those responsible, and protect both citizens and critical infrastructure,” Dan affirmed. He also cautioned the public about the dangers of misinformation spread via social media, urging vigilance and critical evaluation of online content.
This development reflects the heightened tensions between Russia and European countries concerning regional security and stability. As a member of both NATO and the EU, Romania is actively pursuing strategies to enhance its defense capabilities against hybrid threats. President Dan’s response forms part of a broader European effort to unite in ensuring security amid evolving geopolitical challenges. Incidents of this nature have the potential to influence the political environment across the region and pose additional challenges to international safety.
